ANDREI NOT THE MAN FOR DERRY
THE news that Andrei Kanchelskis (below) has expressed an interest in becoming manager of Derry City is one of those great bits of PR for both the club and the SSE Airtricity League. But it’s not what the Candystripes need. And judging by the former Manchester United’s record since hanging up his boots (relegation and instability), he is also not the man they will need to make them a competitive force in the Premier Division — providedd they stay up. That now looks more likely after caretaker manager Paul Hegarty led them to a muchneeded 3-1 win over Bray Wanderers last weekend, and tomorrow’s vital trip to Limerick will be another chance for Hegarty to stake his claim for the full-time position. However, Derry CEO Sean Barret and the club’s board should not decide their longterm boss on the back of these final few games.
