Ageing masterminds who led the heist
THE GUV’NOR
AT 76, Brian Reader was the oldest in the gang and was referred to by his co-conspirators as the The Master or The Guv’nor.
He was caught out by his Oyster transport card records, which showed he travelled to the burglary – and to planning meetings – by bus and train from his home in Dartford, Kent. When police searched the detached property, they found paraphernalia related to the diamond trade.
THE PLANNER
THE raid took place just five minutes from the Islington home of chief planner John Collins, 75.
He was caught on CCTV wearing a smart green quilted cap and carrying a briefcase as he took up position as a look-out. He swapped his gleaming white Mercedes for the shabby white Transit van that was used to carry the tools to the burglary.
Police found a stash of cash and a money counter at his home.
MR FANCY DRESS
DANNY Jones, 58, travelled to Hatton Garden at least five times before the burglary and was said to be at the heart of the heist.
He was caught on CCTV wearing an eccentric outfit during the raid, complete with striped trousers, a hi-viz waistcoat, red trainers and a navy baseball cap.
Police found a box of dust masks, the book Forensics For Dummies, a drill, balaclavas and a walkie-talkie at his house.
THE LIFT MAN
TERRY Perkins, who celebrated his 67th birthday during the raid, was involved in all stages of the operation i ncluding disposing of the loot.
Police believe he was inside the Hatton Garden building posing as a builder and ‘working’ inside the lift on March 31. When his property was searched, police found jewellery, cash, blue overalls, five pairs of white fabric gloves and a quantity of euros.
