When six senior players withdrew, Claudio Ranieri plundered the youth ranks to make up the numbers against Hapoel Tel Aviv on Chelsea’s last trip to Israel in October 2001. What happened to those who were called up?

JOEL KITAMIRIKE

The 17-year-old started in central defence with John Terry but never played for Chelsea again. Drifted through a number of lower-league clubs before he was jailed in 2008 for supplying drugs.

PAT BALDWIN

An unused substitute aged 18. A defender, he never played for Chelsea but lined out more than 200 times for Colchester.

DANNY SLATTER

An unused substitute, the midfielder, 20, moved to Cardiff, Walsall and Dundee United after leaving Chelsea.

RHYS EVANS

An unused substitute. Former England U21 goalkeeper, 19, played more than 100 games for Swindon and ended at Hereford United.

JOE KEENAN

An unused substitute. Midfielder, 19, who played twice for Chelsea before moving abroad to Belgium, Holland and Australia. Had a brief stint at Hibernian and loan spell with Brentford.

CARLTON COLE

Travelled, aged 18, but did not make the bench. The striker left Chelsea for West Ham in 2006 and played more than 250 games for the Hammers and seven times for England during the Fabio Capello era.

He joined Celtic last month.

LEON KNIGHT

Did not make the bench. The 19-year-old striker failed to break through at Chelsea. He played more than 100 times for Brighton before spells in Greece, Scotland and Ireland. Now manages Barnton FC in the NW Counties Division One.

JOHN TERRY

Then aged 20, he conceded a penalty which led to the first goal. He has played 685 games for Chelsea, scoring 65 goals and winning 78 England caps since then. Still captain of the club, although his contract is up at the end of the season.
