Emma has no Room for the Golden Globes glamour-off...

- By Laura Butler Showbusiness Editor

SHE’S a hot favourite to win a Golden Globe for her adaptation of her bestseller Room but Emma Donoghue will not be battling it out in the glamour stakes on the red carpet.

Instead of following the celebrities in their high-end finery – including fellow Irish nominee Saoirse Ronan – the writer says she will be wearing one of her own dresses and she ‘couldn’t care less’

Dubliner Ms Donoghue, who now lives in Canada with her partner and two children, will compete for Best Screenplay at the Hollywood ceremony tomorrow night.

And she has opted for an ensemble from her personal wardrobe for the occasion.

‘I’m not wearing anything too fancy but I’ll be happy in it,’ she told the Irish Daily Mail. ‘Everyone is looking at the talent, they’re not interested in lingering on the screenwriter.

‘I’m not borrowing a dress, I’m just wearing one of my own and I couldn’t care less.’

However, she said she will avail of the Golden Globes beauty team. ‘They send you a groomer. They send somebody up to your room to make you look pretty before you go – make-up, hair and everything.’

Ms Donoghue has also been given the nod for Best Adapted Screenplay accolade at the upcoming BAFTAs and is hotly tipped to be among the category contenders at the 88th Academy Awards, which will be unveiled on January 14.

It seems to be the year of the Irish, with Saoirse Ronan and Michael Fassbender also picking up nominations for prestigious prizes.

And on being tipped for an Academy Award nod next week, Ms Donoghue said that she’s already thrilled beyond belief by Room’s recognition. She remarked: ‘[The Oscars] is the ultimate but I’m so thrilled we’re getting this attention at the Globes.

‘There’s no big budget behind this film and it really needs the publicity because there’s no big studio behind it.

‘To see it get this attention and be part of a conversation on a global level is really fantastic. I don’t need any more luck, I feel like the luckiest person already.’

Ms Donoghue is on the guest list for three after-parties following tomorrow’s Golden Globes. Should she win, she’ll

be celebrating with chocolate instead of champagne.

‘I’m a great disappointment to my friends because I don’t drink alcohol and when they’re saying, “Let’s break out the champagne” I’m saying, “Or let’s have some good chocolate”,’ she said.

‘My son wants us to get a selfie with Lady Gaga but I don’t know how I would even approach her.

‘Also I need to wear my glasses to make sure I can even recognise everyone.

‘The kids are with a nanny so they’re actually getting sick of my travelling. I just get to bring one person and the kids keep saying, “why not us?”
