Countess Miriam and her RTÉ army all f ired up for 1916 special
RTE’S biggest stars are fired up and ready for the 1916 celebrations – and have already got decked out in full Rising regalia.
Miriam O’Callaghan – looking more like Countess Constance Markiewicz – joined comrades Kathryn Thomas, Joe Duffy, Seán O’Rourke, Marty Whelan and Marty Morrissey yesterday to launch RTÉ’s Easter weekend coverage.
As part of an Easter Monday special, RTÉ will effectively shut down the Dublin city centre to put on a spectacular 1916 Rising commemoration.
The free family event that will take place from 11am-6pm on Monday, March 28, will turn O’Connell Street, Smithfield, St Stephen’s Green, Merrion Square, Trinity College and other areas into a live homage to people of 1916.
Visitors can experience an enormous variety of talks and exhibitions, live musical and theatrical performances.
Transport Ireland has come on board to provide public transport from the four corners of the country to get families in and out of the city. Families of two adults and two children can purchase a one-off Leap card for €25 which will give them unlimited city access for 24 hours – albeit maybe without the Luas due to potential strike action.
Miriam & Co. yesterday got dressed up in petticoats, tweed caps and military uniforms at a unique set constructed at Howth Castle to launch the Centenary spectacular. See www.rte.ie/1916 for tickets and more details.
