What not to say on Tinder: girl’s tweet goes viral

IF you’re looking for love and thinking of using an online service, make sure you think twice before you swipe right on Tinder, one of Ireland’s favourite dating apps.

Dublin City University student Rebecca Keane, 21, struck a chord with fellow jaded internet users this week when she tweeted a screenshot of a response she received from a man called Patrick with whom she had ‘matched’ on the dating app.

The DCU student had matched with the young man – understood to be a student at UCD – however, her Tinder match needs a lesson in online dating etiquette following his response.

Ms Keane was unimpressed by Patrick’s response and made his lack of gallantry known by tweeting the response, which swept the web as it touched a nerve with other internet daters.

Patrick responded to the Tinder match by saying: ‘Sorry, thought you were the other girl in the profile pic .. ask her can I have her number … please x’

The French and Media student had a top notch response for the man which was applauded by social media users who fully supported the young woman’s sense of humour.

Ms Keane replied: ‘She actually has a boyfriend but thanks for the confidence boost regardless.’

Speaking to the Irish Daily Mail, the 21-year- old said she doesn’t use the dating app frequently but like most third level students she has a look every now and again.

Ms Keane said: ‘I wouldn’t be too much of a serious person so I wasn’t hugely offended at his response but my friend in question that is in my Tinder profile picture is actually a school friend.

‘On a night out I used to have guys asking for her instead of me so it brought back flashbacks.

‘That’s literally the first message he wrote. He hasn’t responded since and I went to check my matches and I think after the media attention came to my tweet he had unmatched me.’

The DCU student didn’t pass on the phone number of her pal despite Patrick’s eagerness. She also said there ‘are a few couples I know that met on Tinder but i n the grand scheme of things it’s rare’.

However, the experience won’t to deter the student from finding love.

‘I think when you’re in university that “banter” is very important,’ she said. ‘I think Patrick might be a student in UCD but since he unmatched me, I can’t go back and check.’

She added: ‘My mam’s friend saw an article in the UK about it and is convinced I’m famous now.

‘It’s not put me off online dating and I think everyone in some situation in life thinks of themselves as the “ugly friend”. I think lots of people retweeted the picture and said, “Oh that’s so me” or tagging their friends in the photo.’

She added: ‘It’s been a pretty surreal response but my parents don’t know I’m on Tinder or Twitter so I’m hoping they are not finding out anytime soon.’
