THIS IS WHAT 56 LOOKS LIKE

MY BUDGET HAIR TRICK

I’M NOT ready to embrace grey hair yet! In between expensive colouring trips to the salon, I have a cheap — and brilliant — trick for hiding stray greys which stand out in my black hair. Brush W7’s Root Camouflage Kit (€9, amazon.co.uk) into your roots for an instant cover-up. And don’t forget your umbrella if it’s raining!

DON’T BE A WASHOUT

IT’S IMPORTANT to know which colours complement our skin tone, especially as we age. Some colours can be draining (read: ageing) while others work wonders. With that in mind, wear what is right for you.

Work out if your skintone is warm or cool, light or deep. Bright colours, such as zingy reds and turquoises, suit me because of my deep, warm skin tone, while greys and blacks can wash me out, especially if I’m tired.

SMUDGE AWAY WRINKLES

THE older we are, the less we can get away with bold, dramatic make-up. I loved thick, sleek black eyeliner when I was younger, but now that look is harsh and ageing.

Black eyeliner still complements me but I have to tone it down. I use Bourjois Queen Attitude Khol Kajal eyeliner (€8.99, boots.ie), as its tip is perfect for blending. If you have blue eyes and fair skin, try a brown or grey liner — and never forget to smudge.

OILY FISH FOR GOOD SKIN

I ADOPTED a meat-free diet as a young adult and have been opting for plantbased substitutes, such as soy milk in place of cow’s milk, for 15 years.

As you reach the menopause, it’s remarkable how many foods take a toll on your appearance. I think eating oily fish, such as mackerel and salmon, at least three times a week has kept my skin glowing.

SWAP YOUR SKINCARE

A GOOD moisturiser is key to keeping older skin supple, soft and plump. Don’t just opt for a familiar brand; try different types.

Getting stuck in a rut can leave our skin lacklustre. My bathroom cabinet is bursting with different creams, balms and butters — I rotate them to keep my skin energised.
