Here comes the bride! RTÉ star Claire Byrne ties knot

- By Naomi McElroy

RTÉ broadcaster Claire Byrne tied the knot with long-term partner Gerry Scollan in a discreet and private ceremony yesterday.

The bride and her new husband posed for pictures in a floorlength ivory satin gown at their reception with friends and family.

But she started the day in a knee-length cape-sleeve dress that she topped off with a pillbox hat and a discreet hint of a veil.

Mr Scollan, who is from Leitrim, also changed between the ceremony and the afters – shedding his grey suit and blue tie for a stylish navy tailored suit.

Ms Byrne, 40, has always been adamant that she would keep her wedding private and low key. Accordingly, she managed to keep details about her big day secret from all but her family and closest friends.

She previously said: ‘We’re just going to do something small and enjoy it ourselves.’

A handful of guests were present for the intimate Dublin ceremony where she said, ‘I do’ to IT specialist Mr Scollan.

The afters was held in the Anglers Rest pub in Strawberry Beds, Chapelizod, Dublin.

The couple began dating in 2011 and have been engaged for three years. They have two children together – two-year-old Patrick and Jane, who is aged one.

Ms Byrne, was previously married to radio executive Richard Johnson; that relationship ended in 2006.

The current affairs broadcaster, who is from Durrow in Co. Laois, had previously insisted that she had no interest in a ‘big white wedding’, and would only have one if it was what her fiancé wanted.

Speaking to the RTÉ Guide, she added: ‘Maybe that might be a bit strange because I’ve done it already but he hasn’t.

‘But neither of us are keen on a big, huge wedding, and we’re not in a hurry right now.’
