Woman killed as doctor goes on gun spree at NY hospital

A DOCTOR shot dead one woman and wounded six other former colleagues before turning the gun on himself at a New York hospital yesterday.

Dr Henry Bello, a family physician, is believed to have started shooting at his old co-workers at the Bronx Lebanon Hospital while dressed as a physician. The attack began at around 2.45pm.

Police sources said the 45-year-old gunman hid a high-powered weapon under his lab coat before the attack on the 16th floor of the hospital.

He was confirmed dead by an NYPD spokesman just before 4pm following a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The body of the female victim, believed to be a doctor, was found next to him on the 17th floor, according to one report last night.

Bello had been a physician at the hospital. Last night, it was not clear why he was no longer working at the hospital.

Heavily armed NYPD units were dispatched to the scene in the immediate aftermath of the shooting and scoured the building in search of the suspect.

The New York Daily News reported that a trail of blood was found leading from the second to the eighth floor of the hospital.

A fire department official told the New York Times that at least three of the shooting victims were doctors.
