Man knifed 35 times before body was ditched

AN Eastern European man was stabbed up to 35 times and dumped in a ditch in north Dublin, gardaí believe.

The discovery of the man’s body was made yesterday morning in the Naul by a man out walking at 10.50am.

The man, who was fully clothed and appears to be in his 30s, may have lain dead for up to two days, according to detectives.

His body seems to have been ‘hastily dumped’ at the location. Officers believe the murder scene was at another location and his remains were ‘simply disposed of’ in the ditch on a laneway.

Superintendent Noel Carolan confirmed yesterday afternoon that a murder probe has been launched. Gardaí in Balbriggan are appealing to the public for information.

A Garda spokesman said: ‘Gardaí in Balbriggan have discovered the body of a male at a laneway of the Ballyboughal to Oldtown Road (R129), about a kilometre outside Ballyboughal, at approximately 10.40am. The scene has been preserved and the offices of the State Pathologists and the Garda Technical Bureau have been notified’.

Supt Carolan said: ‘We are not entirely sure of his identity yet which is why I was speaking earlier of the need for people who may have someone who has failed to return last night or failed to report for work or otherwise is known to be missing from the area.

‘We do not have any reports of anyone in the area who has been missing who might be the person we found here.’

A post-mortem is being carried out but gardaí confirmed the man died as a result of multiple stab wounds.

The process of identifying him has begun but indications suggest that the victim is Eastern European.

Supt Carolan stressed that officers are at the very early stages of the investigation. However the fact that the body was not well concealed suggests to officers it was ‘dumped in a hurry’.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have any information to contact Balbriggan Garda Station on 01 8020510, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
