ROCKED BACK!

Brogan’s huge impact fails to net Dubs start

- By PHILIP LANIGAN

THERE is no place in the official Dublin starting 15 for Bernard Brogan despite the former Footballer of the Year’s big impact off the bench in the Leinster final against Kildare.

He replaced the black-carded Dean Rock and went on to hit five points from play — yet that’s not enough to make the cut for tonight’s All-Ireland quarter-final against Monaghan as free-taker and joint top scorer Rock is once again included. Cuala’s Con O’Callaghan is listed at centre-forward with James McCarthy partnering Brian Fenton at midfield.

The listing of another Player of the Year Jack McCaffrey at No 12 rather than his usual wingback slot is also interesting, Niall Scully not making the cut as Jonny Cooper is named in defence.

The GAA yesterday confirmed that a sell-out

crowd is expected for the box office double bill that sees All-Ireland champions Dublin take on Monaghan at 6pm. Armagh-Tyrone throws in at 4pm.

Armagh’s hopes of taking out Ulster champions Tyrone have been dealt a blow with the news that Andrew Murnin will miss today’s All-Ireland quarter-final due to a hamstring injury.

Murnin scored the crucial goal in last Saturday’s qualifier against Kildare and had 1-1 to his name by the time he was forced from the field in the 48th minute.

His place up front is taken by Ciaran O’Hanlon. Aaron McKay also misses out due to injury and Joe McElroy comes into the team.

Mayo have named an unchanged team for Monday’s All-Ireland quarter-final replay.

It’s back to the future for All-Ireland hurling champions Tipperary as manager Michael Ryan picks 14 of the side that trumped Kilkenny last September for tomorrow’s semi-final against Galway.

That means a recall for Darren Gleeson between the posts, Michael Cahill is back in at cornerback, James Barry is at No 3, and Donagh Maher lines out at right corner-back.
