Carrey wins legal bid to use Cathriona’s medical files

- By Peter Doyle

HOLLYWOOD star Jim Carrey has won his legal bid to use his late Irish ex-girlfriend’s medical records as part of his defence in the wrongful death lawsuit he faces.

Ms White’s husband Mark Burton and her mother Bridget Sweetman are suing the 55-year-old actor after she took a fatal overdose of prescription drugs.

They claim Mr Carrey used ‘wealth, influence and celebrity status’ to provide the medication. Lawyers for Mr Carrey say, however, that the 30-year-old make-up artist was prescribed the medication after undergoing a breast operation.

Mr Carrey’s legal team wanted access to his former girlfriend’s medical records – but her family objected on privacy grounds.

At Los Angeles Superior Court yesterday, Judge Deirdre Hill ruled that the medical file was to be handed over to Mr Carrey’s counsel.

Raymond Boucher, who was representing Mr Carrey, told the court: ‘We know she had breast surgery that month, we know she had oxycodone prescribed to her that month.’

Speaking outside court, Mr Boucher described the ruling as an ‘extremely important’ victory for his client.

But the family’s lawyer Michael Avenatti also claimed victory, warning the actor his medical details could also be made public.

Mr Carrey, who denies all the allegations, will face a 20-day jury trial next April.
