Tom’s top vino... for under €10

-

AS Gerry Adams reveals his penchant for an expensive tipple, the Mail’s Food and Wine Critic, Tom Doorley says: I don’t know where Mr Adams is buying his wine, but he would appear to have expensive tastes. It would be a rarity for me to spend €30 on a bottle of wine, largely because you don’t have to these days. The supermarkets are packed with decent wine – some of it actually very good indeed – at around a tenner. To give you an example, I was in Aldi in Fermoy the other day and picked up The Project Sauvignon Blanc for €7.99, Exquisite Collection Clare Valley Riesling (one of my go-to whites) for €9.99, and Exquisite Collection Rioja Reserva for €10.99. The total? €28.97 – and all lovely wines worth more than that. These are Tom’s low-priced supermarket stars…

The Project Sauvignon Blanc, €7.99, Aldi

A really zingy, zesty white wine from South Africa. Dry and pungent with a scent of grapefruit zest and a touch of tropical fruit.

Chateau Tour de la Pey, €9.99, SuperValu

Proper red Bordeaux for a tenner. This is mainly Merlot with some Cabernet, no oak and good firm fruit. Dry and savoury.

Santa Rita Cabernet Reserve €10, Tesco

One of Chile’s best ambassadors, this red is full of ripe blackcurrants with a vanilla scent from oak seasoning. Meaty. And for those of you like Gerry Adams who fancy splashing out a bit more (but still want to get a fiver change from €30)...

Chateau Fuissé Saint Veran, €24.95

This white Burgundy is 100% Chardonnay with serious structure and what buffs call ‘minerality’. Serious gear at a very fair price.
