ST BRIGID’S left it late to win their seventh Roscommon SFC title in eight years at Dr Hyde Park yesterday. They were handed a perfect start when Brian Stack found the net after just 15 seconds, but Roscommon Gaels, looking for their first title since 2004, kept in contention and the gap was just two points at the break — 1-9 to 2-4 — after Cian Connolly slotted a penalty and James O’Gara finished a great move to the net. Mark Healy blasted home a third goal for Roscommon after 34 minutes, but then they lost centre-back David O’Gara to a black card. Brigid’s then powered on and secured back-to-back titles thanks to late goals from Conor Murray and Eddie Nolan. In Limerick, Adare made history by winning their first Limerick senior football title when they beat red-hot favourites Newcastle West at the Gaelic Grounds. In one of the most entertaining Limerick county finals in years, Newcastle West looked to have grabbed a winner thanks to a Paul Hannon point seconds from the end of normal time. However, Adare fought back and claimed the honours thanks to a stunning Jack English goal. Elsewhere, Tourlestrane came from four points down to become the first team to win back-to-back Sligo senior championship titles since 1989, after a four-point victory against Eastern Harps, with Cathal Henry’s goal proving the defining score. Meanwhile, Éire Óg bridged a five-year gap when a goal in each half proved crucial as they carved out a win in the Carlow SFC final replay, with a red card for Rathvilly’s Alan Kelly swinging the momentum in Éire Óg’s favour.
