WEEKEND BREAKDOWN

- By LIAM HEAGNEY

FORMER Ireland captain Lyn Cantwell and her new daughter (above) joined women’s teams across Ireland in wearing wristbands with the word ‘legacy’ in protest at the IRFU’s decision to appoint only a part-time head coach for the 2018 Six Nations.

CHAMPIONS CUP SHOWS WEAKNESS OF THE PRO14

IRISH eyes are mostly smiling after two rounds of Champions Cup, but October hasn’t been good to the Pro14’s reputation as an alleged equal to the rival Top 14 and Premiership tournaments. Of the half-dozen teams to have lost both openers in the elite 20-team European competition, four are from the Pro14 (reigning champions Scarlets, 2015 champions Glasgow, Ospreys and Treviso). Only the Irish have secured positive results in the cross-league fixtures, the Pro14 losing four of its five games with the English and four of its seven against the French.

CONNACHT’S two wins from two in Pool 5 of the Challenge Cup have shown the steady progress of the Westerners under the stewardship of Kieran Keane (above). Eoghan Masterson, in particular, had a strong showing with a superb try against the Worchester Warriors and he led his team to their 15-8 win.
