Rail staff snub talks appeal

- By Naomi McElroy

IRISH Rail staff rejected appeals to return to the Labour Court last night as they forge ahead with plans for travel misery over coming weeks.

While separately Impact and Siptu members at Aer Lingus both voted to accept a Labour Court pay deal yesterday, rail unions said they were not prepared to allow the Labour Court to decide on the merits of their pay claim. The Labour Court held hearings on the pay row during the summer, before it directed the unions and Irish Rail to go back to the Workplace Relations Commission for further discussions.

In August, Labour Court chairman Kevin Foley urged both parties to return to the Labour Court if those talks were unsuccessful, for the unions to return to the Labour Court. The unions rejected this request.
