Only a little of this savoury and nicely ready Sainte-Foy-Bordeaux with attractively smoky Merlot fruit, unoaked with round tannins and good grip. Meaty stuff.

DOMAINE DE LA BELLE ESTELLE CAIRANNE €10.99, ALDI

This southern Rhone red could easily pass for a serious Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre. Dark, lovely concentration, silky, deep and long.

MONTAGNY DOMAINE LES GUIGNOTTES €22.99, SUPERVALU

A lovely lightly oaked Chardonnay with the extra degree of ripness you expect from this far south in Burgundy. Grapefruit and red apple, vanilla.
