MONTY’S PLANT OF THE WEEK

- Hippophae rhamnoides

is one of the best plants for seaside gardens, as it can withstand wind and salt. It has narrow, silvery-green foliage and bears great clusters of warm orange berries that’ll last long into autumn, creating a vibrant display. You need a male and female plant close by to pollinate and produce the vitamin C-rich berries. It’s almost impervious to summer drought or winter cold and will make a large, thorny shrub up to 6m tall unless pruned back. The berries are edible but very tart – the boiled juice goes well with champagne if sieved and mixed with sugar.
