Just who do these TDs think they are?

-

THE proposed visit to North Korea by TDs John Halligan, Shane Ross and Finian McGrath (Mail) is so preposterous that it is the kind of scenario one would expect to see in a Three Stooges or Laurel and Hardy film.

If it were to go ahead it would amount to nothing more than an attention-seeking ego trip at taxpayers’ expense by a few parliamentarians who have convinced themselves that they are masters of the universe because of the bit of power they have. Self-congratulatory back-slapping taken to an extreme level.

If they were to turn up at his door I’m sure North Korean leader Kim Jong-un would treat them with the same comical disdain that he would show to three flies crawling up his front window. FRANK O’CONNOR,

Blarney, Co. Cork.

...INDEPENDENT Alliance ministers John Halligan, Shane Ross and Finian McGrath hope to achieve what the UN, US and China have failed to do – that is, persuade madcap leader Kim Jong-un to abandon his nuclear weapons programme and become a messiah of peace instead.

How will the pot-bellied dictator react to this bold request? There are a number of possibilities.

He may inform the three wise men to depart, and only come back to him when they’ve managed to convince the US, UK, France, Pakistan, China, India and Israel to destroy their nuclear weapons too.

Or, he might roll around the floor laughing before ordering his guards to escort the three hapless ministers down into the dungeons.

The least likely outcome is that the North Korean leader throws his arms up in the air and exclaims: ‘You guys are right, I’m gonna scrap the whole nuclear programme immediately!’

This option is more likely to occur in a dream Mr Halligan has the night before he meets Kim Jong-un.

Whatever happens, you have to admire the boldness (or madness) of Ireland’s Three Wise Men. GER CARSON,

Co. Donegal.
