Niamh bids ‘Fairwell’ to soap after 22 years

‘Playing Niamh was an honour’

SHE’S had her ups and downs – and the mandatory torrid love life – but Fair City’s Niamh Brennan is leaving Carrigstown and heading off into the sunset.

Actress Clelia Murphy – who plays the feisty favourite – will bid a fond farewell to the RTÉ soap tonight after 22 years.

And fans have been promised there is a ‘surprise twist in store’ for her onscreen partner Paul Brennan, played by Tony Tormey. It is expected that the actress will run away to exotic Fiji.

Earlier this week Niamh’s former lover, Marcus Orsetti, returned to Carrigstown with a life-changing offer for her.

While things are starting to look up for the Brennans, as they begin to rebuild their empire, Niamh can’t help be tempted by Marcus’s offer of a fresh start. As Niamh secretly plans for her new life in Fiji, Paul remains oblivious as to just who is really behind it.

Clelia, 41, said she is leaving the soap to pursue new career opportunities but hasn’t disclosed any details as of yet.

The actress, previously speaking about leaving the show, said: ‘Playing the part of Niamh Brennan has been my honour and indeed my privilege since her introduction to Carrigstown all those 22 years ago. In that time I’ve been lucky to have been part of some of Fair City’s most exciting and challenging storylines.’

Clelia said the highlight on the show was the first-ever Fair City two-hander episode that just featured characters Niamh and Paul. She said: ‘My fondest and proudest moment was being part of that.’
