- Irish Daily Mail Reporter

RAY D’Arcy’s father, Ray Sr, has passed away.

The ex-Army man, who hails from Kildare, was a keen musician and played with various bands. He died on Thursday.

Fans of RTÉ’s Ray D’Arcy Show took to Twitter to offer their condolences to the popular radio and TV host.

One wrote: ‘Sincere condolences to Ray... and all the D’Arcy family on the sad passing of Ray Senior. May he rest in peace.’

The host’s close bond with his father was often highlighted by Ray sharing his father’s pancake recipe with his radio audience every Shrove Tuesday.

Speaking on Pancake Tuesday last year, Ray told listeners to his RTÉ Radio 1 show: ‘I’ve done this I think for the last ten years. It’s a tradition now nearly as long-standing as Pancake Tuesday itself. Big up me da, hi Da!’

He then introduced his father to present his ‘famous pancake recipe’ on air which ‘always gets good reviews the day after’.

While on the show, Ray D’Arcy Sr – a father of nine – shared a humorous quote he had recently read with listeners: ‘Not all fairy stories begin with “Once upon a time”; many start with, “If I’m elected, I promise...”’

Mr D’Arcy Sr’s remains were reposed at McWey’s Funeral Home, Abbey View, Kildare town, yesterday evening.

The funeral Mass is due to take place in St Brigid’s Church, Kildare town, at 1pm today. Mr D’Arcy Sr will later be cremated at 3pm in Newlands Crematorium.

He is survived by his wife Mary, and his children Ray, Joe, Jacqui, Hugh, Anne, Paul, Marianne, Claire and Joan.
