Teenager in court over crash that followed break-in report

- By Lisa O’Donnell

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy appeared in court yesterday following a collision in Co. Kildare, which left another teen in a serious condition in hospital.

The crash took place after gardaí received a report of a burglary in Athy on Thursday and they have since confirmed their officers interacted with the car involved.

At Naas District Court, the teen, from Tallaght, who allegedly drove the car, faced charges of dangerous driving, having no insurance and the possession of an article with the intent to commit burglary, the Leinster Leader reported. Three teenagers in total were arrested following the crash at J8 at Johnstown on the N7 Naas Road.

It’s understood members of the Garda anti-burglary unit had been patrolling the road after receiving a report of a burglary.

The occupants of the house returned home and disturbed the intruders, who fled the scene in a waiting car.

At around 3.45pm that afternoon, gardaí on the N7 signalled a car to pull over.

When they approached the vehicle, it sped off. A short time later, the car crashed into another vehicle. One youth was released without charge on Thursday, while another remains in Garda custody. The fourth occupant remains in Tallaght Hospital, where he was taken with serious injuries.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland yesterday Assistant Garda Commissioner John O’Driscoll confirmed that the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission will carry out an independent investigation into the incident.
