Mourinho’s fury at club stalling on £40m Rose

- By CHRIS WHEELER

JOSE MOURINHO is frustrated over Manchester United’s reluctance to make a £40million move for Tottenham defender Danny Rose. And the situation is contributing to Mourinho’s increasingly tense relationship with the club’s board. The United manager wants to sign a world-class left back and sees Rose as an ideal fit. The 27-year-old England international has made no secret of the fact that he feels underpaid at Spurs and would welcome a move. Ashley Young, a converted winger, is United’s first choice in that position after Mourinho decided that Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind were not up to the job. United chiefs, however, believe Shaw can still be a success despite struggling for form and fitness since his £30m move from Southampton in 2014. It is understood that United want to let Shaw develop further and sign a left back for the future. With Young serving a three-match ban, Shaw has started the last three Premier League games and is not expected to be sold this month. But Mourinho has made it clear that his priority is to sign a left back, a midfielder to replace Michael Carrick, and a winger. United are reluctant to make any panic buys in January as Manchester City run away with the title and would prefer to wait until the summer when they will know if they have qualified for the Champions League. Mourinho is unhappy with United’s recruitment process, which involves a number of departments reporting to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward. The Portuguese is also understood to be concerned over United’s ambition and feels that his employers will be happy to finish in the top four. United, on the other hand, are perturbed over their manager’s public comments over transfers in recent weeks and will not be pressured into spending more.
