Eau in one! Golfer Clarke scents success

- By Linda McGrory

GOLFER Darren Clarke is swapping par fours for parfum.

The British Open winner is hoping for the sweet smell of success this year with the launch of a luxury brand of fragrances.

Darren Clarke – Day and Night is a bespoke line of two scents crafted by perfumers who have worked with fashion houses including Givenchy, Guerlain and Marc Jacobs. The scents bring together the 49-year old’s ‘passion for golf and his love of style and fine living’, according to its makers.

Day is described as ‘complex’ combining slightly woody and fresh notes of grapefruit along with black pepper and incense, cedarwood and vanilla. Night displays ‘delicate top notes of saffron and thyme blended with a heart of leather and nutmeg, which soon give way to a sensual base of oud, cedarwood and musk’.

The 100ml bottles of eau de parfum, retail at £90 each (€101) with a discount for buying two. They are available online and in selected golf pro shops.

EVEN people who have no interest in golf recognise Darren Clarke as one of sport’s great characters.

His ebullient presence on the circuit made him a popular figure among golfing enthusiasts and his fellow professionals alike.

Few who saw his performance in the closing stages of the Ryder Cup in 2006, just six weeks after his wife had died from cancer, will ever forget it.

Now the 49-year-old, in a move that few of his peers could have predicted, is bringing out his own range of fragrances. Given the many moments of sporting pleasure he has brought us down through the years, this newspaper hopes that he experiences the sweet smell of success yet again.
