Lidl to raze store, but no decision on site’s future
LIDL bosses are to demolish a store that was badly damaged by a JCB and looted during Storm Emma.
They also said they have yet to make a final decision on what they will do with the site in Fortunestown, west Dublin, once the building is demolished.
They said they had assessed the structure of the store and have decided to demolish the building ‘in the interests of health and safety’.
A Lidl spokesman said the company is ‘overwhelmed by the messages of support from the community’.
To show its appreciation, the German-owned discount grocer company will offer a complimentary shuttle bus service from Fortunestown to its store at Whitestown Way, Tallaght, for its customers.
The spokesman said: ‘We are aware that some of our customers in the Fortunestown area are experiencing difficulty in accessing and doing their shopping in other Lidl stores in the locality after the devastating events of last Friday night.’
The service is due to operate once a day from tomorrow, and the 40-seat bus will depart from opposite the Fortunestown store at 10.30am.
Thieves took advantage of recent severe weather, allegedly looting the store last Friday night using a JCB digger.
Up to ten people have appeared in court in relation to the raid and an earlier alleged break-in at a nearby Centra shop.
