Colgan told harassment probe he is a ‘tactile person’
THE Gate Theatre’s former artistic director Michael Colgan described himself as ‘a tactile person who would often be seen throwing his arms around actors and writers’.
His comments were revealed in an independent report into sexual harassment and bullying at the Dublin theatre. However, Mr Colgan completely rejected any allegation that he sexually harassed or bullied anyone while at the Gate for 33 years.
Workplace relations expert Gaye Cunningham interviewed Mr Colgan last December, and again in January. ‘He denied shouting at staff or using profane language. He stated that he was demanding boss, but thought everyone liked him. He denied having mood swings,’ her report said.
However, overall, Ms Cunningham found that Mr Colgan has questions to answer about respect in the workplace, abuse of power and ‘inappropriate behaviours’.
She also noted the ‘anger and frustration’ of many interviewees at the perceived futility of making complaints to management.
The Gate’s board said last month that it ‘apologises unreservedly to those who experienced the behaviours reported to Ms Cunningham’.
Mr Colgan could not be reached for comment yesterday. As part of an agreed refreshment process at the Gate, two board members are due to step down later this year.
