DERRY AND ANOTHER CASE OF BABY FOUND DEAD IN CAR BOOT
A TEENAGE mother was being cared for yesterday after her baby was found stillborn in the boot of a car outside a hospital.
The girl, who is believed to be from Co. Donegal, made her way to the hospital in Derry and is believed to have delivered her baby outside the building.
The newborn, thought to have been some weeks premature, was found in the boot of a white Audi last Thursday, in the hospital car park close to the entrance of the Maternal and Foetal Assessment Unit in Altnagelvin Hospital.
The young mother, who was left in a traumatised state, went into the hospital to report what happened but then disappeared, it was reported.
Concerned staff contacted the PSNI who located the distressed mother and found the tiny corpse inside the car. A forensic examination was carried out and the PSNI is investigating what happened.
Deputy mayor of Derry and SDLP councillor John Boyle told the Irish Daily Mail: ‘It is a very sad, delicate situation for everyone involved.
‘When you hear about this kind of situation your thoughts are with the young mother. Something clearly went very tragically wrong. Many people in our community are very saddened by this tragedy; lots are parents and know about the situation of giving birth and the complications that can arise. It is just very sad.’
The Western Health Trust, which operates the hospital, did not comment when contacted by the Mail.
