His mother was raped in House of Horror... she says there is no excuse for Nevin cruelty

- By Ronan Smyth

PATRICK Nevin’s mother has revealed that she wrote to the Director of Public Prosecutions to say she had disowned her son after his first rape of a women when he was 17.

Cynthia Owen also urged her son’s other victims to report the attacks to the gardaí.

‘I want them to know they will be believed and that there are no excuses for what he did,’ she said. ‘My thoughts are with the victims and I have been praying for them daily and I hope they get justice.’

Patrick Nevin, 36, was found guilty last November of sexually assaulting a student and recently admitted to raping a women in Meath in 2014 and sexually assaulting another woman a couple of days later.

Ms Owen herself was the victim of what was dubbed the Dalkey House of Horrors. At age 11 she gave birth to a baby girl after being raped repeatedly by her father. She alleges that her mother killed the baby to cover up the abuse and the body was left in a Dún Laoghaire laneway in 1973. The death of the baby was the subject of a 2007 inquest in which Ms Owen’s identity as the mother of the child was revealed. In an interview with the Sunday World yesterday, Ms Owen said her past should not be used in this case and that Nevin’s childhood is no excuse for his actions.

‘Let me be very clear. His childhood should not be used as an excuse. A lot of people have had tough upbringings but we do not do what he did.’ she said, ‘This was a man who, aged 33, with a good job, a top-quality education and a beautiful family, decided to plan to meet women online and then attack them. There is no excuse for what he did and my family history should not be used in this matter.’

He had a good job and education
