No dramas... Big Fat Greek Wedding’s Nia divorces

-

MY Big Fat Greek Wedding’s Nia Vardalos and Ian Gomez have called it a day on their union but say that it ‘is completely mutual and amicable,’ and that they’ve ‘been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time.’

The statement came amid news that 55year-old actress/writer, pictured, filed for divorce from actor Gomez, 52, after 25 years of marriage, TMZ reported this week.

The couple tied the knot in 1993 and in 2008 adopted their daughter Ilaria Vardalos Gomez, 11.

The couple’s full statement read: ‘We’ve been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time. Our relationship became a friendship so the decision to end the marriage is completely mutual and amicable.

‘It is our hope that decency will prevail on the reporting of this story which will soon be yesterday’s news. Thank you for respecting our privacy.’

Ms Vardalos in court documents listed the duo separated on June 29, 2017, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ as the reason for the breakdown of the marriage, according to the outlet. She has asked the court for joint legal and physical custody of Ilaria.

Her marriage was a point of inspiration for My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a romantic comedy based on her real-life experience as a Canadian of Greek descent looking for love.

The film, which co-starred Michael Constantine, John Corbett, Lainie Kazan and Joey Fatone, was released in theatres in 2002 and became one of the highest-grossing independent films of all time. It also spawned a 2016 sequel again starring Ms Vardalos.
