QUESTION

Dear Linda, I have no children, however most of my friends are mothers. The problem arises when I meet up with a good friend who has three children. They are so badly behaved that it is very embarrassing. In restaurants they run about and cause havoc. My friend seems oblivious. When I confronted her about it, she suggested that I don’t understand because I am childless, and that it is easier for her to ignore the situation. I don’t wish to fall out with her, but I have no intention of being out with her children again in public. Please advise. T.

ANSWER

Dear T, It sounds a bigger problem than your friend cares to admit. The fact that you don’t have children is of no consequence, your friend’s parenting leaves a lot to be desired. However, if she is not prepared to take the lead, apart from meeting up with her alone there is very little you can do. Do not feel guilty for not tolerating unacceptable behaviour. The only way to deal with this is to be direct and suggest you meet without the children in future.
