Limerick survive scare

- DAVID BYRNE

SHANE DUGGAN was the hero as he blasted ten-men Limerick in front to claim his side a valuable three points in their fight against the drop.

The hosts got off to the worst possible start, reduced to ten men with just three minutes gone.

Eoin Wearen was adjudged to have taken down Noel Hunt as he was through on goal but Paul Keegan’s resulting penalty was superbly saved by Tommy Holland.

Limerick responded well and were awarded a penalty of their own after the half-hour mark. David Webster dragged back William Fitzgerald as Billy Dennehy cooly slotted home.

The second half was a nervy affair for Barrett’s young guns, as former fan favourite Bastien Hery came back to haunt his ex-club. The French midfielder took full advantage of an ill-disciplined attack from Limerick, running 70 yards before smashing home in front of the healthy travelling support.

There was a late scare for the home side but Akinade’s header was collected by Holland as Waterford players claimed the ball had crossed the line.
