Mad Hatters hungry for a Galway win
THERE was a time when the bubbly would be flowing in the Galway Tent.
But it was a tea-total family affair for the finale of the Galway Races yesterday as young and old competed trackside in the quirky Mad Hatters Day competition.
Local Galway girls Eilish McEvoy and her daughters Emma and Leah certainly caught the eye with their unusual headwear on display.
And with their hurlers triumphing over Clare in Thurles, the Claregalway trio were in their element with mother Eilish – the 2015 winner of the prize – sporting a hat depicting a teapot pouring tea into a cup. The girls’ hats featured sushi and a market trader selling chocolate.

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary had winner
again this year as hundreds stepped out in kooky attire for the annual contest for adults and children.
On Thursday Charlene Byers was named the Most Stylish Woman and the winner of the G Hotel Best Dressed event on Ladies Day.
Presidential hopeful Gavin Duffy also turned up for the races last week. The businessman and Dragons’ Den star has thrown his hat in the ring to take on President Michael D Higgins in the race for the Áras.
Yesterday, there was a rare bit of good news for Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary, whose horse, Sub Lieutenant, romped home in the fifth race. Meanwhile, Willie Mullins was crowned the trainer of the festival, bagging the most wins.
