Dancing with the plough and the stars!

‘He’s had three operations’

THE National Ploughing Championships may not be traditionally associated with razzmatazz – but it was hot to trot yesterday at least!

Dancing With The Stars participants Marty Morrissey and Anna Geary reunited at the opening day of the event, joining almost 100,000 others in Tullamore, Co. Offaly.

Former Cork camogie star Ms Geary got out the glad rags once again as she joined judge Julian Benson and partner Kai Widdrington for ‘Dancing at the Ploughing’.

She also revealed she worried about boyfriend Kevin Sexton’s knee when he bent down on a walk – before realising he was proposing last weekend.

The newly engaged pair were staying at Cork’s luxury Castlemartyr Hotel for another friend’s wedding when Mr Sexton popped the question. Ms Geary , 30, told The Ryan Tubridy Show on RTÉ Radio 1: ‘We went for a walk, very simple... Then all of a sudden I was like, oh my God – he’s had three knee operations, his knee’s after going! What’s that for happening? I found that he was down on one knee and sure enough I don’t remember anything else.’

President Michael D Higgins officially opened the 87th annual championships in Screggan near Tullamore, Co. Offaly, alongside his wife Sabina.

Last night it was announced that due to the passing of Storm Ali, the opening of the exhibitions and stands to the public would be delayed until 11am today but would remain open an extra hour in the evening until 7pm. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is unlikely to attend as planned due to the morning delay.

Almost 300,000 people are expected to attend the three-day event.
