...OH, AND SHE ALSO OPPOSED FLOURIDE IN WATER!
IN 2015 correspondence, Liadh Ní Riada denounced fluoridation of Irish water.
‘There is much evidence to suggest that the fluoridation of water is an inefficient and unnecessary form of medicating for dental health,’ she said.
The two-page correspondence was posted on Twitter recently.
In this letter, the Sinn Fein MEP pointed to the fact that ‘Ireland is one of only four EU states that supports fluoridation’.
She continued: ‘Fluoride is easily and cheaply available in most toothpastes. This form of administration allows citizens to make an informed choice to use this medicine and control and monitor its intake. The medication of public water supply on the other hand, removes this element of choice.
She said she would ‘support the motion calling for the immediate cessation of fluoridation of the public water supply, and I would urge the members of Cork County Council to adopt it’.
Last night a spokesman for Sinn Féin said her comments are ‘consistent’ with the party’s position on the matter.
The spokesman said: ‘In fact, Sinn Féin has moved legislation in the Dáil to end the fluoridation of the public water supply and Cork County Council actually passed the motion in opposition to this practice.’
The Irish Dental Association says it supports fluoridation as an ‘essential element of oral health policy’.
