Wild­fires in Cal­i­for­nia leave at least five dead

FIVE peo­ple have been killed in a south­ern Cal­i­for­nia wild­fire as a blaze rag­ing in the north of the state trig­gered a manda­tory evac­u­a­tion or­der for much of ex­clu­sive beach­side Mal­ibu.

The vic­tims’ bod­ies were found in ve­hi­cles con­sumed by the flames in Par­adise town, north-east of San Fran­cisco.

A sep­a­rate wild­fire north-west of Los An­ge­les has roared south, sweep­ing into the Santa Mon­ica Moun­tains yes­ter­day.

The ex­clu­sive coastal town of Mal­ibu, home to many Hol­ly­wood stars, has about 13,000 res­i­dents and lies at the south­ern edge of the moun­tain range.

The Cal­i­for­nia Gover­nor’s Of­fice of Emer­gency Ser­vices says an­other fire in north­ern Cal­i­for­nia has also claimed lives.
