Fourth-time lucky? ‘Ecstatic’ Caitriona on Golden Globe Best Actress list AGAIN
CAITRIONA Balfe has just bagged her fourth Golden Globe nomination in a row for her performance in Outlander – but like all talented actresses she still managed to be ‘thoroughly shocked’ at the prestigious nod.
The Dubliner, 39, secured a Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series nomination for her portrayal of Claire Fraser in the hit US TV drama.
Also flying the flag for us is The Favourite, a production from Irish company Element Pictures with Dublin cinematographer Robbie Ryan.
The movie secured an impressive five nominations, including Best Motion Picture in the Musical or Comedy category.
Despite being nominated for the last four years consecutively, Caitriona was still delighted when the news was announced yesterday.
‘Wow, thoroughly shocked and
‘Beyond proud to be in your company’
completely ecstatic to hear I am among the nominees,’ she told her Twitter followers.
‘A HUGE thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for their continued support and a HUGE congratulations to Julia, Elisabeth, Sandra and Keri, I am beyond proud to be in your company,’ she also said of her category’s other nominees.
Gushing to her 682,000 Instagram followers, she added: ‘Mostly, thank you to my incredible fellow actors and the wonderful team of writers, producers and crew on Outlander that push me to my best. I am so bloody proud to be on this list… again.’ Her enthusiastic caption finished by stating that she would be ‘dancing many little jigs tonight’.
Outlander follows Caitriona playing the role of Claire as she is transported between two lives.
One of these is as a British army nurse after World War II married to an MI6 agent-turned-historian, while the other takes place in 1743 where she enjoys a passionate relationship with a Scotsman. The series is adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling book.
Caitriona’s up against Elisabeth Moss, Sandra
Oh, Julia Roberts and
Keri Russell for the award.
The Favourite, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the brains behind the unnerving thriller The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, is set in England in the early 18th century. It’s a lot lighter than The Killing Of A Sacred Deer – and fans of his quirky comedy The Lobster should enjoy it. Broadchurch’s
Olivia Colman earned a nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture in the Musical or Comedy category for her portrayal of Queen Anne in the production. Additionally, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz both scooped nominations for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for their roles in The Favourite. Rachel plays Lady Sarah, who runs the kingdom for the eccentric Queen Anne. Abigail, a new servant in the royal estate, is played by Stone.
Its writers, Tony McNamara and Deborah Davis, also have reason to celebrate, having been nominated for Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture. The film will be showing at Dublin’s Light House Cinema from January 1. The Globes ceremony will take place in LA’s Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 6 and will be hosted by Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg.
