Rose: Wembley’s flat and we’re itching to move

- AMITAI WINEHOUSE

DANNY ROSE believes it is no longer a privilege to play at Wembley after Tottenham were watched by their lowest Premier League crowd at their temporary home.

‘It’s just not nice any more,’ said Rose after playing in the 3-1 win against Southampton on Wednesday night in front of only 33,012 fans — 35,000 fewer than last season’s average gate. ‘I don’t feel it’s an honour to play at Wembley. We’re all itching to get in the new stadium. Hopefully it’s not going to be much longer.

‘We’re disappointed it’s taken longer than expected but we know everybody is putting in the hours to make sure the stadium is as good as possible. It’s not that much longer now, so hopefully over the next couple of months we’re going to be in there.’

There is a growing sense of fatigue among Spurs fans when it comes to playing at Wembley.

The original plan was that the club would move into their new stadium by the start of the season and Rose (right) understands why attendances have dropped off.

‘The atmosphere is a bit flat,’ he added. ‘I sympathise with the fans, travelling further to come to Wembley, but it’s the lowest attendance since we’ve been at Wembley. That speaks volumes.’

Meanwhile, Harry Kane has backed himself to be the Premier League top scorer. He has nine league goals so far, while Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is top of the list with ten. Kane said: ‘Since I’ve been in the Premier League it has had some of the best strikers in the world. Aubameyang is at the top end at the moment. There’s quite a few on eight or nine goals so it’s important for me to carry on doing what I’m doing. When you’ve done it on the biggest stage of them all, the World Cup, you can look back and gain confidence from that. If you’re going through a spell where you’re not scoring, you know you can do it.’
