Brady sees red as Barnes sends Burnley clear
AHEAD of this local tussle, cruelly branded El Scrapico by one heartless radio phone-in punter, Huddersfield chairman Dean Hoyle had vowed not to allow the Terriers to ‘sleepwalk into relegation’. Christopher Schindler did not appear to get the memo, needlessly seeing red in what was a surprisingly entertaining relegation battle, with Ireland international Robbie Brady also being sent off for a lunge late on. The bottom-of-the-table hosts took the lead on 33 minutes when Steve Mounie nodded home Isaac Mbenza’s cross from deep to become the first Huddersfield Town striker to score this season. But two minutes later Burnley equalised with a smart finish by Chris Wood after great work from impressive 19-year-old Clarets winger Dwight McNeil. Then Schindler — already on a yellow — decided to rugby tackle McNeil to the floor. Mike Dean had little option but to go to his pocket and the Terriers were up against it. On 52 minutes Wood missed a glorious chance when Lossl came for and missed a McNeil corner. Moments later Johann Berg Gudmundsson fired straight at Lossl from a rapid visitors’ counter. Burnely, with Joe Hart again on the bench, continued to press, with Gudmundsson just curling one wide. And they grabbed victory on 74 minutes when Ashley Barnes latched on to an Ashley Westwood pass and slotted home to spark chants of ‘You’re going down’ from a delighted away end. A second win a row for a resurgent Burnley side who appear to have gone back to basics.
