Golden girl... Saoirse to present at 76th Globes awards

- By Fionnuala Moran

SHE may not be nominated herself this year – despite receiving rave reviews for her performance as Mary in Mary Queen Of Scots – but Saoirse Ronan is a big enough star to present an award during this weekend’s 76th Golden Globes.

The 24-year-old will perform the role in the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

She was previously nominated for a Golden Globe in 2008 for her role in Atonement and in 2016 for Brooklyn, before her performance in Ladybird led her to scoop the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture last year.

The Mary Queen Of Scots star is in good company presenting, as an array of talented actors will also be taking part in the ceremony.

Jessica Chastain, Lena Waithe, Halle Berry, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lupita Nyong’o, Allison Janney, Octavia Spencer, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Felicity Huffman, Taraji P Henson, Chrissy Metz and Isan Elba are among the other presenters taking to the stage on Sunday.

Joining the women who will announce award winners on the night are Idris Elba, Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman, William H Macy, Sam Rockwell, Ben Stiller, Dick Van Dyke, Michael B Jordan, Mike Myers, Chadwick Boseman, Justin Hartley and Sterling K Brown.

Former Golden Globe winners Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg will be the main hosts of the highly anticipated awards show at which the prestigious Cecil B DeMille award will be presented to the star of The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges.

To the surprise of many, however, neither Saoirse, nor her co-star Margot Robbie, have been nominated for awards for their roles in Mary, Queen Of Scots. Australian actress, Robbie, plays Queen Elizabeth I. Irish stars nominated for awards include Caitríona Balfe, who has been nominated for the fourth year in a row for her portrayal of Claire Fraser in time travel drama Outlander, and the Irish produced movie The Favourite, which has been nominated in an impressive five categories. Saoirse can be seen presenting during the broadcast which begins at 1am Irish time following two hours of red carpet coverage starting on E! at 11pm.
