Last goodbye to ‘miracle’ Fionn

- By Olivia Kelleher

THE mother of a brave seven-year-old boy who died on New Year’s Eve after a long battle with cancer paid tribute to her ‘miracle child’ at his funeral yesterday.

Fionn Doyle – who was honoured by gardaí for his courage – had battled leukaemia since he was 18 months old.

Paying tribute to her son at his funeral yesterday his mother, Eimear Doyle, said the family would forever hold dear the memories of the precious time they spent with their ‘cheeky little monkey’.

Mourners packed into St Bartholomew’s Church in Kildorrery, Co. Cork where Ms Doyle said: ‘We are so, so proud of you [Fionn] and how you fought so hard for so long with such bravery and courage. You still kept that gorgeous smile on your face through it all. These last seven months you have battled on, even though no one had expected you would.’

She said that she and her husband Jack and their children Saoirse and Amy savoured every moment they had with Fionn.

Kildorrery parish priest Fr Eamon Kelleher vowed that the local community would do everything in their power to help the bereaved.

Offertory gifts included a Power Rangers toy, an orange notebook to represent his favourite colour, and a dog lead belonging to his beloved pet Lightning.

Schoolchildren and Kildorrery Scouts provided a guard of honour as his Power Rangers coffin was carried from the church.

Fionn was diagnosed with leukaemia aged 18 months. He underwent treatment and went into remission in 2016, only to suffer a relapse six months later.

A bone marrow transplant in December 2017 failed to stem the cancer.

For his seventh birthday in August, his mum appealed for people to send him a card to make his day special. Ten thousand cards from well-wishers around the world flooded in.

A Garda convoy and a fire engine also called to his home in Kildorrery to help celebrate his birthday. Gardaí from Fermoy also presented him with a medal for being a ‘super hero’.
