Dolores’ hometown to honour her with statue

- Irish Daily Mail Reporter

DOLORES O’Riordan could be commemorated with a statue in her native Limerick city. Limerick Council is to open talks with the family of the late Cranberries singer about building a permanent memorial. Her mother, Eileen O’Riordan said she would like a life-sized one, saying: ‘It will be there when we are all gone.’ It comes as Mayor Daniel Butler is bringing forward plans to name a new civic square in the city centre in honour of the vocalist, who died a year ago this week. He has also suggested an engraved stone replica of the sofa used on the group’s album covers in the square. Councillor Butler said: ‘It would make it an interactive place where fans could sit and get their picture taken on it’.

A new public square is set to open next year at the heart of Limerick’s new €180million Project Opera development.

It will provide a space for concerts and other artistic events, with the University of Limerick also expected to have a presence there.

Councillor Butler said the university’s presence would mean young people would likely be drawn to the site. There would be a library and civic activities too.

He said: ‘Naming the square after her would... be a great legacy. I think something like this is more in line with the calibre of her achievements.’

Fans have flocked to Limerick this week to remember Ms O’Riordan. The singer’s mother attended a commemoration in Ormston House in the city where fans paid tribute to the Cranberries lead singer.
