Mayor of Dublin jumps out of car to tackle mugger

- By Alison O’Reilly

LORD Mayor of Dublin Nial Ring jumped out of his car and tackled a suspected mugger, it has emerged.

The drama occurred yesterday afternoon on Merrion Square in the capital when Mr Ring was on his way to unveil the lineup for the St Patrick’s Day parade.

He heard someone shout, ‘Stop, thief!’ and spotted two men chasing another man near St Patrick’s Cathedral. He asked his driver to stop.

Mr Ring told the Irish Daily Mail last night: ‘I hopped out and went up the path; [the thief] was running towards me. He saw me coming towards him... The guy stopped, he knew the game was up. We just surrounded him and the gardaí were brilliant, they arrived about ten or 15 seconds later, they were amazing.’

He joked: ‘I didn’t even get to use my mayor powers, or even use my chain to tie him to the railings, he just didn’t resist at all. The other two guys were tall and I’m over six foot, this guy wasn’t a big guy.’

Mr Ring said he wants to find out who the two men who gave chase are ‘to thank them for doing their civic duty’. He added: ‘I know people will be joking that I was driving a Batmobile and have some sort of superhero powers and the story will grow legs, but that’s all there is to it.

‘The guy was cornered. Resistance was futile, as they say, and he was caught. No-one was hurt, thankfully, and I went on about my business.’
