Fair play for politicians

-

JOHN Fair (Letters, Monday) blames the Government for everything and he wants the Government to do everything for him.

The Government’s economic policies have been so successful that there are now more jobs than job seekers, giving people choice.

The Government has been so successful that some of our citizens are sending cards to EU leaders boasting that Ireland is now stronger than Britain.

John Fair’s assertion that the same people keep getting elected is completely wrong. Both the last two elections brought in more new people than any other election since 1932.

Our present government has mostly inexperienced ministers. Only three of the 15 ministers were in the 2011 Cabinet: Leo Varadkar, Simon Coveney and Richard Bruton. Because of the high turnover of ministers in recent times, a certain amount of continuity and experience is being lost. The continual voting out of ministers is not encouraging talented people to run for the Dáil. Enda Kenny gave six years of service as taoiseach and did exactly what he said he would do if elected. He achieved an economic miracle for this country and no one ever thanked him.

Irish people should be more appreciative of their hard-working politicians.

JOHN HYLAND, Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.
