Woman, 73, hit and killed by Luas

AN elderly woman was killed when she was struck by a Luas tram in Tallaght yesterday morning.

She was named locally as 73-year-old Patricia Quinn from the Belgard Heights area of Tallaght.

She was struck by a Tallaght-bound Luas at a pedestrian crossing between the Cookstown and Tallaght Hospital stops.

Ms Quinn was pronounced dead a short time later before her body was removed for a post mortem.

Gardaí are appealing for help from anyone who was on the Luas at the time or motorists who may have dashcam footage.

Part of the road was sealed off while the scene was investigat­ed and a number of services between the Red Cow and Tallaght/ Saggart were suspended for hours afterwards.

The tram was removed from the scene and services on the Red Line resumed yesterday afternoon.

Ms Quinn was an avid walker and runner and was well-known and liked in her community. Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Charlie O’Connor said that Tallaght residents were deeply saddened following the news of her death. Patricia and her husband Larry were ‘well respected and a well known couple in St Mark’s Parish in Tallaght’.

‘The tragic accident today has caused deep shock in the community,’ he said.

He said that people had been talking about the accident with deep sadness.

He said Patricia was ‘a lovely woman’ who was very involved in the local church.
