THE PERILS OF YOUR POPCORN By JINAN HARB

...not to mention earphones, lip salve, rubber gloves and even the sofa. As experts reveal, sharing them can leave you with a nasty surprise

THEY say sharing is caring, but sometimes you’re better off not — towels, toiletries and toothbrush­es can carry bacteria, viruses and fungi that can spread between people. ‘In general, it is better not to share anything that goes on or in your body,’ says Lisa Ackerley, a chartered environmen­tal health practition­er. The skin is an effective barrier, but any scratch or break in that barrier makes us vulnerable to those microbes.’ While it seems obvious to avoid sharing towels when we’re ill, here the experts reveal which other commonly shared items it’s healthier to be selfish with.

A POT OF VASELINE

IF THE cold weather has made your lips dry, don’t dip into a shared jar of Vaseline. ‘There’s a lot of bacteria around the mouth and dipping into a shared pot of cream is risky,’ says Dr Justine Hextall, a consultant dermatolog­ist.

For example, the herpes simplex virus, which causes cold sores, is highly contagious and can survive for two hours on skin.

‘Because of the risk of spreading this, and other, viruses — which can sit dormant without causing symptoms in some people — I would never share lipsticks or lip balms,’ says Dr Hextall.

‘What’s more, many microbes — including the herpes simplex virus — may be fine sitting on the skin but can go through mucous membranes, such as those lining the mouth, eyes and nose, and cause infections, which can even lead to inflammati­on of the brain in at-risk individual­s,’ adds Dr Manal Mohammed, a lecturer in microbiolo­gy at the University of Westminste­r.

‘It is feasible that microbes can survive in a tub of Vaseline, because the temperatur­e is just right and it remains moist,’ adds Robin May, a professor of infectious disease at the University of Birmingham.

‘Also, it is made from a fatty compound, and lots of bacteria and fungi can use this type of environmen­t to survive,’ he says. ‘But no studies have tested how well bugs survive in Vaseline.’

The big issue with lip balms, he adds, is that they are used on cracked skin, so there’s an entry point for the infections.

And it’s a similar issue with pots of cream, too, which can spread bacteria that trigger skin infections such as impetigo, and reactions such as folliculit­is, where hair follicles become inflamed.

‘Once a water-based cream is open to air, that environmen­t also makes bacteria multiply,’ adds Dr Hextall. ‘That’s why a lot of creams have pump dispensers.’ If you’re sharing a pot of cream, experts recommend using a disposable cotton bud to dip into it instead of fingers.

IN-EAR HEADPHONES

SHARING earphones is a bad idea, suggest the experts. They’ll often have ear wax on them, which carries dirt and germs too — some of which will be pathogenic, or disease causing, says Dr Mohammed.

People who use earphones regularly have thousands of times more bugs than those who used them infrequent­ly, according to a study in the Online Journal of Health and Allied Sciences in 2008.

The researcher­s said ‘bacterial transfer does increase with use and the chance of it being transferre­d is high [when] people share earphones’. Sharing also increases the chance of otitis externa, inflammati­on of the external ear, they wrote. It is thought that blocking off part of the ear makes it warm and moist, which makes it easier for microbes to flourish.

‘Also, if you constantly shove something in your ear, it can cause damage to the skin and this increases your risk of infections if the bacteria get under the skin,’ adds Sally Bloomfield, an honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Few harmful microbes live naturally in the ear; problems arise when new ones are introduced as this disrupts the normal balance of microbes — ‘recently a patient complained of an ear infection and tests revealed testicle bacteria on his earphones transferre­d from his hands,’ says Professor May.

SOUP AND POPCORN

SHARING food is part of day-today life for many; whether it’s movie popcorn, party snacks or finishing your child’s leftovers.

‘Before sharing food, ask yourself: “Would I share this person’s saliva?” ’ says Dr Mohammed. ‘When we eat, droplets of our saliva transfer to the food, as well as our cutlery. It’ll also be on our hands, which we will then use to touch surfaces.’

‘Saliva can transmit viruses such as those that cause cold and flu; and bacteria that cause strep throat. These will be transmitte­d to others who come into contact with the saliva — whether they develop the infection is down to their immune response to those pathogens.’

If the infectious cell can transfer from the mouth to the air, then it can be transferre­d between people through saliva droplets, according to Paul Dawson, a professor of food science at Clemson University, and Brian Sheldon, a professor emeritus in food microbiolo­gy at North Carolina State University in the US. In experiment­s for their book, Did You Just Eat That?, the two experts looked at the way that bacteria are transferre­d on foods.

For example, if two people share a bowl of chicken soup, they found that bacteria were transferre­d back to the bowl from each person’s spoon after it had been in their mouth, with between 70,000 and 90,000 bacteria being transferre­d to the soup after six mouthfuls (around 10,000 bacteria a time). The transferre­d bacteria in a soup may not automatica­lly cause problems, says Professor May. ‘I would happily share hot soup with someone, but if it has cooled down then I wouldn’t.’

The key here is that very few microbes survive at 50c or more.

‘If you’re serving steaming hot soup, even if you cough directly into it, most microbes won’t survive,’ says Professor May. ‘Once it has cooled to 37c — lukewarm — these conditions would sup- port bugs to survive more, so avoid sharing.’

Meanwhile, the problem with popcorn is that people place their hands into the bag multiple times after they’ve touched their mouths and many dirty surfaces in public places, said Professor Dawson and Professor Sheldon. In an experiment, they put deactivate­d E. coli (a bacterium that can cause gastroente­ritis and urinary tract infections) on people’s hands and found 85 per cent of the handfuls of popcorn touched with these hands contained these bacteria, while 79 per cent of the popcorn remaining in the bowl had them. ‘By the time you’re scraping the bottom of the bag, you might as well be kissing the person sharing the bag with you,’ they said.

WASHING-UP GLOVES

‘THE environmen­t inside washingup gloves is conducive to bugs,’ says dermatolog­ist Dr Hextall.

‘We tend to use them with wet hands so they get warm and moist inside, which means microbes can flourish. They will harbour bugs on the outside too, including those that cause food poisoning — and these can easily then be transferre­d to your hands and other surfaces.

‘I’d also be cautious about using gloves near food we’re going to eat, so I’d store them under the sink, and wash my hands after using them. As well as different rubber gloves per person, you’d also need a different pair for different chores, such as for the kitchen and bathroom.’

TOOTHPASTE

SHARING a toothbrush is a complete no-no, says Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the Oral Health Foundation. ‘That’s because they pick up a large load of bacteria and viruses from the mouth and the bathroom; these gather in the brush and can easily be passed on as it remains warm and moist.’ In particular, bacteria linked with gingivitis (gum inflammati­on) and blood-borne infections can be shared. Store toothbrush­es in separate pots, too — touching can spread harmful microbes from one mouth to another.

They should also be kept in a cabinet to minimise the number of microbes that latch onto them from the loo. (Flushing the loo has been shown to spray millions of bacteria into the air, and these can land up to 10ft away.)

Meanwhile, if you have a sore throat or any viruses, you should even avoid sharing toothpaste, says microbiolo­gist Dr Mohammed. ‘These contagious germs can spread from your mouth to the toothbrush then to the tip of the

shared toothpaste, where they may survive for some time and can be caught by someone else.’ Most mouthwashe­s contain antimicrob­ial compounds, but while it’s fine to share a bottle, don’t swig from it: ‘Use the cap then rinse it to wash out microbes,’ says Dr Carter.

SOFAS

IF YOU’RE chilling out on the sofa after a long day, you may unknowingl­y be exposing yourself to flu.

Recent — as yet unpublishe­d — research shows the couch could be another shared item that can easily spread harmful bugs.

‘We found the influenza virus will survive for two or three days on a couch, and when you sit on it, it’ll create aerosols that will contaminat­e your clothes and hands — and you can also inhale the virus,’ says Charles Gerba, a professor of microbiolo­gy and environmen­tal sciences at the University of Arizona in the US. By using tracer viruses, compounds that attach to viruses and help track their movement, he found that when people sit on a couch with flu droplets on it, the virus spread all over them.

‘The best thing is only to sit on vinyl or leather couches — as you can disinfect them if you need to,’ says Professor Gerba.

MASCARA & EYELINER

ANYTHING that comes into contact with your face should be kept to yourself, says Professor Bloomfield.

Mascara or eyeliner should never be shared as microbes can get through the mucous membrane in the eye.

‘A brush is dry, so microbes may not survive for long, but in a mascara they would, as it is wet and warm inside,’ adds Dr Hextall. Dr Mohammed agrees, noting that brushes and mascaras may carry bacteria that spread acne and cause conjunctiv­itis. They can also carry microbes that cause cold, flu and measles — and these can be transferre­d through the eye membrane.

A CHILD’S HAIRBRUSH

SHARED brushes and combs can obviously transfer nits, but they can also carry bacteria and yeast infections that form on the scalp, says Dr Hextall.

There’s also a risk of catching scabies and fungal infections such as ringworm from someone who carries these microbes, adds Professor Bloomfield. Don’t share brushes with young children as they are likely to carry some of these infections on their scalp, says Dr Hextall. ‘After puberty, the pH of the scalp changes, making it less conducive to fungal infections.’

NAIL FILES

IF YOU’RE having your nails done, beware of shared nail files, clippers and anything that’s used close to the nail, says Dr Hextall. ‘They must be sterile or single use to prevent infections spreading.’

In particular, fungal nail infections can spread this way, and they are ‘very difficult to treat’, she says. ‘Once the nail is damaged, there is a portal for entry for other infections, such as bacterial ones. Those with conditions such as diabetes are at risk of cellulitis [an infection in the deeper layers of the skin].’

‘If you know someone has a fungal nail infection, don’t share anything with them, including nail files and shoes. A fungal nail is identifiab­le by a yellow, thicker nail that often has an odd shape.’

SAFETY RAZORS

DON’T share a razor as there’s a chance you will cut the skin, which opens you up to infection as bacteria can spread through the blood, says Professor Bloomfield. Some germs may be able to get through cuts we can’t see with the naked eye, says Dr Mohammed.

‘For example S. aureus, which lives on the skin without problems, can gain access through the tiniest cut and cause folliculit­is or impetigo. It is a similar case with bacteria that cause warts, some yeast infections and Trichophyt­on, a fungi that can cause athlete’s foot, ringworm, and jock itch.’

HAND TOWELS

‘AFTER two days, if you dry your face on a hand towel, you’re getting more

E. coli on your face than if you stuck your head in a loo,’ says Professor Gerba. For a 2017 study, his team went door-to-door and collected 500 hand towels — tests found nearly 90 per cent carried coliform bacteria (the type that originates in faeces); around 14 per cent carried E. coli; and 4 per cent carried Salmonella (a cause of food poisoning). People often don’t wash their hands properly, so when they dry them on towels, they transfer dangerous microbes to them. Soggy towels then sit in a damp bathroom, becoming a breeding ground.

‘Pathogens such as those that cause flu, norovirus and skin infections need moisture and an ambient [warm] temperatur­es to flourish, so a towel hanging in the bathroom is perfect,’ says Professor May.

‘For an average person a soggy towel doesn’t pose a huge risk, but if you had any scratch or open wound — or used it near your mouth or eyes — it’s a different story.’

For example, S. aureus can cause infections such as impetigo and if skin has eczema or acne, it may trigger flare-ups, adds Dr Hextall. ‘In my house, anyone with any cold, infection or stomach bug has their own towel and puts it in the wash straight after.’
