Sheedy eyes improvement despite Cork victory
TIPPERARY manager Liam Sheedy was delighted with the way his side dug out a strong display to secure their Division 1 quarter-final spot with victory over Cork at Páirc Uí Rinn yesterday. Jason Forde scored 1-13 as Tipp built on a 0-16 to 0-6 half-time lead to push on impressively and set up a last-eight tie with Dublin. The win itself was important, but the manner of it was extra pleasing for Sheedy. ‘Yeah, it was a good result but aside from the result it was a good performance,’ he said. ‘We moved the ball well. There was a bit of flow about us today. ‘We were working hard in the middle area because that’s an area where Cork punish you if you give them time. We worked that area well. ‘We’ve some really good players, when they get on the ball, they can do really good things. ‘Sixteen points in the first half, 1-13 in the second is a good summation of the day. ‘Some of our play we’d be disappointed with. In the finish, we did sit back, we let Cork come at us. They could have got another score or two and that would disappoint us but, overall, a good day.’ For his part, Cork manager John Meyler was left to rue how his side failed to build on the win over Limerick in their last outing. ‘We played Limerick two weeks ago and put in a good solid performance and we followed it up today with a disappointing performance,’ he said. ‘In the first 10 minutes I thought we were going well, but then Tipp took over and really drove it on.’ Cork face Kilkenny in a relegation play-off while Sheedy and Tipp move on to a quarter-final with Dublin.
