Sixth arrest over machete murder
GARDAÍ have arrested a sixth person in connection with a machete murder of a Polish man in Cork last year.
Yesterday, a woman in her 30s was arrested as part of the investigation into the death of 35-year-old Mikolaj Wilk who was murdered in his home on June 10 last year.
She was being detained last night at the Gurranabraher Garda station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act.
This was the third arrest in the last week, and sixth overall, by gardaí investigating the case. On Wednesday, two men in their 30s were arrested in relation to this murder inquiry.
One man was taken to Togher Garda station where he remained in custody yesterday.
The other man was taken to Gurranabraher Garda Station and was later released without charge.
A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
In January, three men were arrested, two from Poland and one from Latvia, by detectives investigating the death of Mr Wilk.
All three men, aged in their 30s, were questioned by gardaí and subsequently released without charge. A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
In the early hours of Sunday, June 10, a gang burst into Mr Wilk’s home in Ballincollig, Co. Cork, and hacked him to death as his two children slept.
His wife Elzbieta tried to defend her husband and was injured during the attack.
Gardaí arrived at the scene within five minutes of being called by a woman in the house at 3.17am. However, the gang had already left the area.
Mr Wilk was found in a pool of his own blood in the hallway of the house. He later died in hospital. In November last year at Mr Wilk’s inquest, gardaí said they were pursuing ‘several avenues’ in their investigation.
The inquest was reopened last week but was adjourned again after gardaí told the coroner that the investigation is ‘live, active and ongoing’.
