Corrie favourites may be set for return to cobbles

-

CORONATION Street has been hit by controversy in recent weeks after it emerged that seven stars had quit the ITV soap within three months – with more departures predicted.

But now, in an attempt to boost morale, show bosses have reportedly lined up the shock return of much-loved character Norman ‘Curly’ Watts – played by Kevin Kennedy, 57, pictured – who was on the cobbles for 20 years until he was axed in 2003.

They are also said to be keen to have Helen Flanagan return to her role as Rosie Webster, following the actress’s maternity leave to have her second child.

A source revealed to The Sun: ‘Things are pretty bleak behind the scenes. Bosses want to bring joy back, on and off screen. The plan is to bring back one or two high-profile stalwarts who are a hit with older viewers.

‘Kevin has previously said he wants to come back, so it’s about agreeing terms and finding the right story,’ they said – giving hope that Curly will make his comeback.

However, a source said the character has not been lined up for a return to the show. They said: ‘Kevin is a great actor but there are currently no plans for Curly to return to the cobbles.’

Addressing the alleged drama behind the scenes, they added: ‘All this talk of a crisis is nonsense and there are no crisis meetings.

‘It’s business as usual; actors come and go all the time due to either their decision to leave or as dictated by storylines – that is just the nature of soap.’

Meanwhile, bosses have reportedly ‘begged’ Helen, 28, to make a comeback following her extended break after the birth of her second daughter Delilah.
