CELTS MAKE MOVE FOR MOURINHO

- By JACK GAUGHAN

CELTIC have launched a sensational move for Jose Mourinho. The Scottish champions have made an offer to Mourinho, who is mulling over his next step after being fired by Manchester United in December. The 56-year-old is likely to field several more approaches over the coming weeks, with Lyon and Roma also interested in his services. The salary on the table at Celtic is believed to be competitive, although Mourinho is unlikely to be rushed into a decision. A move north of the border would be an opportunity to strengthen his trophy haul, with Celtic gunning to become the first team to lift 10 consecutive league titles. Saturday’s 3-0 victory at Aberdeen confirmed their eighth Scottish Premiership crown on the bounce. Meanwhile, interim boss Neil Lennon paid tribute to his predecessor Brendan Rodgers after his side wrapped up an eighth successive Scottish Premiership title. Lennon’s team clinched the title with a 3-0 victory at Aberden on Saturday. Headers from Mikael Lustig and Jozo Simunovic kept them in control before Odsonne Edouard put the icing on the cake. Lennon highlighted the contribution of Rodgers, who left for Leicester in February. ‘We have to pay tribute to Brendan,’ he said. ‘A lot of credit has to go to him for this title success and the foundations he built here.’ There are two fixtures remaining — against Rangers at Ibrox and Hearts at Celtic Park — before the Scottish Cup final against the Jambos at Hampden Park on May 25. ‘It has been coming,’ said Lennon. ‘We had been due to give someone a good going over and unfortunately for Aberdeen it was them.’ Elsewhere, Steven Gerrard admitted he was running out of ideas to tackle Rangers’ discipline problems after Allan McGregor’s ‘moment of madness’ earned a late red card against Hibernian. The 37-year-old goalkeeper kicked out at Marc McNulty in the 89th minute of Rangers’ 1-0 win at Ibrox — moments after making a brilliant closerange stop from Florian Kamberi. Rangers had to see out a dramatic finale with Ross McCrorie in goal, having used all three substitutes. McCrorie did not have any chance to show whether he shares any of the goalkeeping talent of his twin brother and Rangers team-mate Robby, who is on loan at Morton. But McGregor’s acrobatic kick at McNulty following a kick-out from his hands will see him miss the final two games of the season. The Rangers manager said: ‘I can’t defend it. He pulls a world-class save off to get us three important points and then he has a moment of madness. ‘It’s frustrating. We’ll miss our No1 keeper and that will start with a important game next week.’
