Politicians’ sit-in threat as 5,000 rage at PM

-

REMAINER MPs and campaigners last night threatened a Commons sit-in, protests on the streets and even a general strike as they vowed to defy Boris Johnson’s prorogation of the British parliament.

As furious Remain supporters accused the prime minister of acting like a ‘dictator’, shadow treasury minister Clive Lewis challenged police to remove him from the chamber when the Commons shuts down.

Shadow equalities minister Dawn Butler said she would ‘occupy’ the building – while one Labour MP called for a general strike.

And Green MP Caroline Lucas demanded people ‘take to the streets’ to overturn Mr Johnson’s ‘coup’.

Last night, more than 600,000 people had signed a petition on the parliamentary website against prorogation without an extension to Article 50 or the cancellation of Brexit. All petitions with more than 100,000 signatures are guaranteed a debate in the commons.

Meanwhile, an estimated 5,000 protesters determined to defy what they called Boris Johnson’s ‘coup’ gathered in Parliament Square to demonstrate.

Labour MPs and Remain campaigners rubbed shoulders with anarchist and communist supporters, as the protest moved from College Green, beside the sovereign’s entrance at parliament, towards Downing Street.

Having arrived next to Number 10, hundreds of protestors sat on the street, blocking traffic and chanting ‘No Brexit for Boris’ and ‘stop the coup’, as small battalions of riot police looked on.
